The Adverse Impact of the TCP Congestion-Control Mechanism in Distributed Systems

Several studies in network tra c characterization have concluded that network tra c is self-similar and therefore is not readily amenable to statistical multiplexing in a distributed computing system. This paper examines the e ects of the TCP protocol stack on network tra c via an experimental study on the di erent implementations of TCP. We show that even when aggregate application tra c smooths out as more applications' tra c are multiplexed, TCP introduces burstiness into the aggregate tra c load, reducing network performance when statistical multiplexing is used within the network gateways.
